Jim's picture was featured in that article relating to allergies. Well for the most part the article was great, however I
have a few things that I would like to add to the article, you could call them disagreements or maby just a different
perspective.
Before I do that however I would like to thank our client and friend Jimi Lott, for thinking of us when he got the
assignment. He is an excellent Photo journalist.
Well on to my thoughts. The first one is about having your carpets professionally cleaned every five years. Give me
a break. Your carpet is designed to hide dirt. It will hold up to 1 pound of dirt per square foot of carpet before it ever
looks dirty. I don't care how strong the suction is on your vacuum, it can not remove the dirt that is in the base of the
fiber. ONLY professional steam cleaning will do that. The other thing about waiting five years is, you will void the
warranty on your carpet.
The next item on my list of thoughts is about vacuuming once a week. That is fine if you have no allergies, But if you
do, then you need to vacuum more often than once per week and you certainly need to use a HEPA certified filtered
vacuum cleaner. When you vacuum with a machine that does not have a HEPA filter you are trapping the larger size
pieces of dirt but, microscopic particles are just thrust back into your atmosphere to terrorize you more.
The last item on my list is about replacing your carpet with vinyl or harwood floors. Your carpet acts as a trap to hold
on to pollutants and allergens until they can be properly removed via vacuuming or professional cleaning. If you don’
t have that trap in place, then the pollutants and allergens that come into your home stay in the air (and in your
nose) because there is nothing in place to keep them from floating around. I read a study  that was done in Sweden.
They studied schools with carpet and schools with out carpet. All other things being the same, in the schools without
carpet the children had more colds, allergy suffering type problems, and kids gone on sick days than the schools
with carpeting. As a result of the study they put carpet in all of their schools. Mike Berry of the EPA says that carpet
plays an important role in the health of our homes. But like a sink when it is full it must be emptied.
So those are my thoughts relating to the Seattle times article. Don't get me wrong on the whole I thought it was
great, and I am deeply grateful for the exposure to our company. However I felt obligated to at least give our clients
some other things to think about.
